Introduced to the market last month, the 2023 Toyota Grand Highlander is an all-new three-row SUV that will sit between the current Highlander and the new 2023 Toyota Sequoia. It promises more space than the Highlander and its hybrid engine is more powerful. That said, the right choice for you will depend on your needs. Let's take a closer look.
Interior Space
The most notable difference between the two models is their size. The Grand Highlander is larger and offers a more spacious third row of seats than the Highlander, making it an ideal choice for those who need more room for their passengers or luggage.
When it comes to cargo capacity, the Grand Highlander outperforms the Highlander by offering more space. Behind the third row of seats, it offers 566 liters of space, compared to 453 liters for the Highlander. With both rows of seats folded down, its cargo capacity reaches 2,747 liters, while the Highlander tops out at 2,379 liters.
Engine Options
Both the Grand Highlander and Highlander are powered by the same base engine, a refined and efficient 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Both models also come standard with performance all-wheel drive. When it comes to hybrid powertrains, the Grand Highlander and Highlander offer two distinct options. The Highlander Hybrid features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors producing a combined 243 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.
The Grand Highlander Hybrid, on the other hand, is more powerful, with a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor on the rear axle, offering a total of 362 horsepower and an impressive 400 lb-ft of torque. With these engines, these vehicles offer a remarkable driving experience, combining performance and fuel economy.
More safety technologies
Finally, the 2023 Grand Highlander is also equipped with the latest suite of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 active safety technologies, while the Highlander features TSS 2.5. On the other hand, we expect the Grand Highlander to be more expensive than the Highlander, so it will all depend on your specific needs. What is certain is that neither model will disappoint you.
