The 2021 Corolla continues to evolve with enhanced styling and nine trim models that feature three engine options. Built on a reputation of reliability and efficiency, the Corolla builds on it with some of the most efficient engines offered in the segment. Competitors such as the 2021 Hyundai Elantra attempt to de-throne the Corolla’s strengths, but in the following comparison, we see that it falls short.
The 2021 Toyota Corolla features better power and efficiency
The 2021 Corolla features three different engine options, including a hybrid. The L Manual, L CVT, LE CVT, and XLE CVT include a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with either a six-speed manual transmission or Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
The Corolla SE CVT, SE Manual, and XSE CVT upgrade to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that generates 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, making this the most powerful option in the Corolla lineup. However, the 2021 Elantra’s most powerful (and only) gas engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that reaches 147 horsepower and manages 132 lb-ft of torque. This isn’t quite up to par with the Corolla’s 2.0L, but is more competitive with the reduced 1.8-litre Corolla engine.
The Corolla Hybrid features an 1.8L Atkinson cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine with two motor/generators that produces 121 system horsepower. It achieves a city/highway combined fuel efficiency rating of just 4.5 L per 100 kilometers while minimizing emissions. The Elantra’s hybrid generates more horsepower at 139, but has a higher combined fuel efficiency rating of 4.7 L per 100 kilometers, making the Corolla Hybrid the most efficient of both.
The 2021 Toyota Corolla adds comfort and a limited edition model
The Corolla has nearly 90 mm of additional rear legroom than the Elantra, providing passengers added comfort for longer trips. All 2021 Corolla trims also add safety features and Android Auto Compatibility.
When you need the most stylish and unique Corolla possible, the 2021 Corolla Apex Edition offers track-tuned chassis upgrades, unique shocks with internal rebound springs, and the available 6-speed manual transmission for enhanced performance. Combined with premium exterior upgrades, the Apex Edition eclipses anything the Elantra offers regarding performance and looks.
