2027 Toyota bZ: A New Dimension for This Electric SUV

2027 Toyota bZ: A New Dimension for This Electric SUV

Toyota has long been recognized for its hybrid powertrains. Today, the automaker also aims to win over drivers ready to make the switch to all-electric. The 2027 bZ and 2027 bZ Woodland, now on sale in Canada, spearhead this offensive with an enhanced offering.

The timing is ideal for Laval drivers. According to Toyota Canada, Quebec is the country’s leading market for the brand’s zero-emission vehicles. The province accounted for more than a third of Canadian sales for Toyota's electric and plug-in hybrid models during the first half of 2026.

From bZ4X to bZ: A Transformed Electric SUV

The bZ replaces the bZ4X, and the change extends well beyond the name. With this redesign, the compact SUV gained up to 50% more power on all-wheel-drive models, leaping from 214 to 338 horsepower. Its range has also taken a significant step forward.

For 2027, the bZ lineup features three trim levels. The front-wheel-drive XLE model uses a 57.7 kWh battery and produces 168 horsepower, offering an estimated range of up to 380 km. The all-wheel-drive XLE trim upgrades to a 77 kWh battery and delivers 338 horsepower, achieving a range of up to 468 km. The AWD Limited trim adds premium amenities such as heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, and a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system.

Cargo volume measures 784 liters behind the second row. A 14-inch touchscreen multimedia system comes standard, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The bZ Woodland: All-Electric Adventure

The bZ Woodland takes the concept even further. Measuring 140 mm longer than the standard bZ, it provides up to 2,120 liters of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. Standard all-wheel drive, 215 mm of ground clearance, and a towing capacity of 1,588 kg (3,500 lbs) make it a capable tool for weekend getaways.

Its 74.7 kWh battery powers dual electric motors delivering 375 horsepower. Toyota clocks its 0 to 100 km/h acceleration at 4.4 seconds, making it the brand's most powerful electric vehicle to date. Estimated range reaches up to 452 km, or 418 km when fitted with the all-terrain tires available on the Premium package.

The Woodland also features X-MODE, Grip Control, Multi-Terrain Select, Downhill Assist Control, and Low-Speed Crawl Control for off-road conditions. A 1,500-watt power outlet in the cargo area lets you run electronic equipment while camping or out on fishing excursions.

Trim Levels at a Glance

Trim Drivetrain Battery Horsepower Estimated Range
bZ, XLE Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) 57.7 kWh 168 hp Up to 380 km
bZ, XLE AWD All-Wheel Drive (AWD) 77 kWh 338 hp Up to 468 km
bZ Woodland All-Wheel Drive (AWD) 74.7 kWh 375 hp Up to 452 km
bZ Woodland, Premium (All-Terrain Tires) All-Wheel Drive (AWD) 74.7 kWh 375 hp Up to 418 km

These driving ranges are calculated under ideal conditions between 20°C and 30°C. In winter, real-world range decreases depending on temperature, vehicle speed, and cabin heating use.

More Flexible Charging

Both models adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, providing seamless access to the vast majority of fast chargers across the continent. Under ideal conditions, a DC fast charger can take the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. The integrated Plug & Charge capability handles billing automatically as soon as the vehicle is plugged in.

New for 2027, every bZ comes standard with CCS and J1772 adapters, ensuring easy access to existing public charging infrastructure across Quebec. A battery preconditioning system helps maintain consistent charging speeds in cold weather—a major asset given our northern climate.

At home, the 11 kW on-board charger allows you to get the absolute most out of a Level 2 home charging station, enabling most drivers to fully recharge overnight right in their driveway.

Going Electric Without Leaving Hybrids Behind

Toyota isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket. The Canadian lineup includes three all-electric models (bZ, bZ Woodland, and C-HR), two plug-in hybrids, and 15 conventional hybrids.

This diverse portfolio allows drivers to select the powertrain that best matches their real-world needs. Commuters with home-charging access driving primarily around Laval will find the bZ to be a natural fit. Outdoor enthusiasts looking to tow a small camper or head up into the Laurentians will naturally lean toward the bZ Woodland. And for those not quite ready to go fully electric, Toyota’s proven hybrid lineup remains ready and waiting.
