The Toyota RAV4 is better than ever for 2021. With several gas and hybrid models now complemented with the RAV4 Prime, the RAV4 lineup is the best option if you’re un the market for quality and choice. There's a model for practically any purpose, whether you are an urbanite, have a growing family, like to spend time on the trails, or anything in between.
To help illustrate how the RAV4 matches up to this model year's competition, we compare it to the Ford Escape.
The 2021 RAV4 has more engine options and power
Gas-only RAV4 models feature a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces a solid 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The Escape's primary gas engine is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder that generates 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque.
The RAV4 Hybrid includes the 2.5-litre petrol engine that combines with the Toyota Synergy Drive that nets 219 horsepower. This adds up to more than the Escape's 2.5-litre I-4 Hybrid, which peaks at 200 net horsepower.
The RAV4 and Escape both have models for owners who want more performance, and the results are interesting. The RAV4 Prime is actually a hybrid that combines the standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder with a
Hybrid Synergy Drive module to output a jaw-dropping 302 horsepower – and it comes with plug-in capabilities. This eclipses the Ford Escape Titanium with a turbocharged 2.0-litre Twin-Scroll EcoBoost that produces 250 horsepower.
Most RAV4 models, including the gas-powered RAV4, Hybrid, and Prime, have standard all-wheel drive with a few exceptions. Escape models offer AWD as an option, which means you’ll probably have to settle with front-wheel drive depending on the model.
There are also known reliability issues with Ford’s smaller gas engines, as well as unknown reliability for the new hybrids. Toyota’s powertrains, on the other hand, have proven themselves may times over.
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 expands cargo volume
Although the RAV4 overtakes the Escape with its performance, it also edges out the Escape in overall cargo capacity. Behind the front seats, it offers up to 1,977 litres of volume and 1,059 litres behind the rear seats. The Escape reduces to respective measurements of 1,852 litres and 974 litres. This difference will give you the capacity to carry along more gear, baggage, or other important items as you go out and explore.
